This lovely Tanuki statue made from ceramic is a beautiful example of Japanese lucky charm.

Tanuki statues are commonly displayed in front of businesses for prosperity, protection, and stability. They welcome you with their wide smile and big belly.

The most famous one is Shigaraki-yaki or Shigaraki ware, originating from Shiga Prefecture. This Tanuki come from Shigaraki and is very popular in west part of Japan. Considered sacred and historical, the area is one of the "The Six Old Kilns" in Japan.

Shigaraki region is in the Kansai area, about 70 minutes' drive from Osaka and is famous for its pottery and stoneware. All the belongings of a Tanuki have lucky meanings.

They are called hassouengi, or the "8 good-luck things" in English.

  • A sedge hat (rice paddy hat) mean you are protect from disasters
  • Big eyes mean you can pay careful attention to your customers
  • A bank book mean you can buy and sell on credit even if you have little money with you
  • A sake bottle mean you always have plenty of food and drink
  • A big tail mean you have stability; your business is safe even in recession
  • A big belly mean you can keep calm and deal with difficult things and be a person with guts
  • A cute face mean you can being amiable; it is indispensable when it comes to business
  • A testicle, a Tanuki's testicles are an allusion to having a lot of money - so, the bigger they are, the more gold you have.

After all this, it's hard to believe that tanuki are actual real animals. They are often translated into English as "raccoon dogs" or "badgers". This is misleading though because tanuki are not raccoons, dogs, nor badgers, they are their own thing. It gets its name "raccoon dog" because it looks like a raccoon, but it is genetically closer to a fox.

Tanuki are small, canine mammals that live in parts of Asia and Europe. They average about 50 cm in length and weigh about 8 kg, with a short torso length. They have been a familiar part of Japanese culture for a long time. They are even found in certain Japanese expressions, such as "tanuki neiri," which literally translates to "tanuki sleep" and means "to feign sleep."

It is also part of what are called the "satoyama" animals, which is a concept in which people live in harmony with nature, appearing in many Japanese folk tales. Tanuki are creatures that have been loved by Japanese people for a long time.
