Charming lot of 2 vintage creative Kokeshi dolls by two great artists: Usaburo (1917-2009) and Muhitsu Miyajima (1929-).

The left one with white flowers is a very pretty doll entitled "Hanagokoro - Flower Heart" and was designed by the award-winning Kokeshi artist Miyajima Muhitsu.

He was born in Yonezawa City of Yamagata Prefecture, Japan, home of many Traditional Kokeshi makers. He began his career under the tutelage of Master Yamagata craftsman Kobayashi, Kichitaro, in the mid-to late 40s, and then switched to Sosaku doll making in the 1950s. His dolls have had a great influence on Creative, (Sosaku), doll makers since then. A multiple award winner, Miyajima-san won the prestigious Prime Minister’s Award in 1973.

This doll represents a young woman wearing a very refined kimono with a hand painted cherry blossom motif. For Japanese, the cherry blosso (Sakura) is one of the most loved flowers: it represents spring and symbolizes the beginning. She has a very elegant hairstyle characterized by the asymmetrical haircut. The facial expression is very serene and the wood has a beautiful vanilla color.

There is the artist signature stamp on the base and the date S45.10.10 which refers to the 10th of October 1970 (Showa 45). This doll is more than 50 years old and is in a very good vintage condition with minors scratches and dents. She stands 20.5 cm (7.9") - 212 grams.

The doll on the right depicts a young woman wearing a kimono with an elegant plum blossom motif. Carved and hand painted by the artist Okamoto Usaburo. The plum blossom (ume) represents rebirth, strength and tenacity, as it blooms in the still cold month of February while there is still snow. In this sense it is also linked to the birth of love and its transformations, in fact the name of this kokeshi is " Koigokoro ", which in Japanese means " Awakening of love ".

The peculiarity of this fascinating kokeshi is the strong contrast of the natural colors of the wood: the darker one (chestnut) highlights the decoration while the play of the veins gives the whole a touch of elegance. The expression on the face is sweet and dreamy and is underlined by the very long lashes and the slightly inclined head position. This is an original model of Usaburo who began his career creating industrial metal works of art and only since 1950 has he devoted himself to the creation of Kokeshi dolls. Throughout his career, he has won numerous awards, including the " Minister of International Trade and Industry " (in 1978, 1984 and 1985) and the " Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries " (in 1979 and 1982).

Under the body of the kokeshi there is the artist stamp and the date 1975 (Showa 50). Despite being a vintage kokeshi , the condition is very good with only two small marks. She stands 22 cm (8.6") - 248 grams.

This set is a nice addition to any home interior and will grace any kokeshi collection.
