Rare Kokeshi doll duo, handmade by female artist Kouson Sato (Komura).

Kouson Sato, one of the few women to make creative kokeshi! Recognized as an accomplished artist, kouson worked from her studio in Fukushima-ken, Kuwaori-Machi.

Her dolls are easily recognizable by their wonderfully sweet, smiling faces. This pair of Kokeshi, sculpted and painted by hand, represents two lovely characters from Japanese folklore: Okame and Hyottoko.

Okame also known as Uzume is a very popular angel-faced goddess in Japan. She is considered the wife of Hyottoko and symbolizes luck. Hyottoko representing humor. One of this character's most famous skills is his ability to blow fire through a bamboo pipe. His comedic characteristics and fire skills make Hyottoko, French fireman, a favorite in Japan.

The particularity of this magnificent couple of Kokeshi is that the head and the body are separated, so it is possible to put them in different positions to change their expression.

Major symbols of Japanese craftsmanship, kokeshi are unique creations. They are highly valued for their historical origins and cultural association. All these Kokeshi have a story, they are a small piece of memory, bought as a souvenir of a trip, offered as a gift, all are the witness of a Japanese way of life!
