A vintage lot of Japanese traditional Mingei art crafts- Lucky Charms - 2 miniature lion's heads or Shishigashira and 2 Tengu Dorei bells.

A perfect gift for Japanese culture lovers In the Japanese culture it is said that if you display many lucky charms, more good luck will come. Miniature lion's heads or Shishigashira Sanuki's lion's head Lion heads or Shishigashira are used during the Shishimai, Lions dance festivals.

Originally, the "lion's head" was posed and worshiped before gods and Buddhas, but it is said to have ultimately been manipulated to express the Shinto Buddha. It is believed that the lion dance began to be dedicated to the shrine during the festival, praying for world peace and the rich harvest. These lion heads are made by gluing many sheets of Japanese paper onto a wooden pattern. An abrasive powder is stuck on it and then lacquered over and over again. Finishing by coloring with black or vermilion

Dorei Bells; These bells are tengu Oni demon Nohs mask, long nose dorei bells. These are clay bells faces of the Japanese traditional lucky mask, which is believed to bring happiness. There is a hard ceramic ball inside each dorei bell that clatters when shaken or moved around.

The history of clay bells (dorei 土鈴) dates back to the Jomon period (B.C. 7000 - 300); their quiet tinkling and plain shape have attracted the hearts of the Japanese people. Infused with a variety of hopes by different individuals, the clay bell and its timbre have deeply penetrated daily lives. Clay bells infuse a feeling of nostalgia in the Japanese people and provide a pleasant sensation.

The name “Mingei” combines min (民), meaning the common people, and gei (芸 or 藝, the same character used in geisha), meaning art. Essentially, Mingei refers to the art of the common people.
