Stunning Japanese woodblock print by Munenori Makino 牧野 宗則 (1940, ). Titled "First Dance"「初舞」and created in 1981. Unframed.
This wonderful woodblock print depicts two women dancing and playing flute around a peacock.

The print is signed and titled by the artist.
This would be a great gift for any Japanese culture fans or woodblock print collectors. This print will give a special touch to any interior.

This woodblock print is made on a luxury paper from Echizen, the Torinoko paper. Echizen is known for producing authentic, high-quality Japanese paper. Torinoko is a very sturdy pulp-based paper, lightly sized to allow for finer detail in ink painting, watercolor, Suminagashi (Japanese marbling), Chigiri-e (Japanese collage), and printmaking.

Peacock, in the Japanese culture, is associated with the deity called Kannon in Japan. It is a symbol of compassion and kind-heartedness, and it is believed to have the power to counteract poison and invoke rain. And it ensures good health. It is altogether a good symbol.

Munenori Makino 牧野 宗則 is born in Shizuoka prefecture, Makino Munenori developed a taste for traditional woodblock prints as early as 1955, visiting woodblock craftsmen in both Tokyo and Kyoto. In 1958 he started learning the technique of woodblock carving and printing, and from 1977 he started having smaller solo exhibitions all over Japan. In 1989 he won his first major prize (the Kawamura Foundation for Cultural Promotion prize), and since then his career has been booming, with many prizes and major solo exhibitions: in 2003, he received the Chief Secretary’s Prize from the Agency of Cultural Affairs in Japan. He also created huge-scale ceramic wall prints hanging in the Shizuoka Airport Terminal and in March 2010 he had a solo exhibition at the Nippon club in New York: "Beyond Hokusai and Hiroshige, Makino Munenori Complete Woodblock Prints".
