Japanese print Katazome, Original Stencil-Dyed Print by Keisuke Serizawa (芹沢銈介), Living National Treasure artist. Stunning picture of a girl praying at a tea ceremony, beautifully designed and colored.

This is a perfect gift for Japanese folk art, Mingei, lovers, and Japanese art collectors. Display this beautiful piece in any room for a sleek look. Printed upon hand-made mulberry (rice) paper and with full margins as published by the Keisuke Serizawa workshop between approximately 1960 and 1970.

This original hand-stenciled dye print entitled 'Child praying alone' is signed with Keisuke Serizawa's chopmark signature in the lower right corner. A finely printed color print in very good condition using a unique and remarkable technique which has made its author an artist appreciated and exhibited throughout the world.

The distinguishing trait of Serizawa's katazome method is the use of the starch mixture to create, not a colored area as is current in direct-dyeing process, but a blank, undyed one that forms a part of the pattern and that can later be colored by hand in multi-color or monochrome as the designer sees fit.

Keisuke Serizawa (1895-1984): a world famous designer, painter, illustrator, dyer and book and print maker.

Keisuke Serizawa attracted international attention as early as 1925 for his distinctive Katazome style, combining Japanese dyeing techniques with those of Okinawan bingata. He applied this technique with equal success to kimono and fabric patterns, wall hangings, paintings, fans and original prints.

Above all, Keisuke Serizawa became a leading artist of 'Mingei' -- which in Japanese generally means folk art. Shortly after the end of World War II, Serizawa Keisuke instituted his own workshop and teaching studio in his native city of Shizuoka. His reputation continued to spread and he received the highest award for any artist in 1956 when he was designated a "Living National Treasure" by the Emperor of Japan.

After Serizawa's death in 1984 the Tohoku Fukushi University in Sendai, Tohoku District, constructed a museum comprised solely of Serizawa's art. The Keisuke Serizawa Art & Craft Museum now contains over 200 examples of this artist's fabric patterns and wall hangings and about 1,000 examples of his paper dyeing workshop productions such as original prints, fans and calendars.

The art of Serizawa Keisuke has been exhibited world wide. In the United States his art has been exhibited thus far in two major one-man exhibitions. The first took place in 1979 at the Mingei International Museum in San Diego and was entitled, "Keisuke Serizawa: A Living National Treasure of Japan". In 1998, the Riverside Municipal Museum, Riverside, California, launched a major retrospective entitled, "The Art of Keisuke Serizawa". His distinctive designs and method were carried on by the two famous pupils, Sadao Watanabe and Yoshitoshi Mori. Later, two museums were built in honor of his works.
