Japanese traditional lacquered art craft, a framed wood panel with the maki-e technique: an unique and rare artwork. Signed by the artist.

Eye catching wall decoration of a flying crane couple, tanchōzuru in Japanese, that are highlighted in and on Maki-e gilt with a touch of red enamel pattern.

A beautiful contrast with the deep black lacquer. This amazing craftsmanship will make a statement in any room and is ideal for a Japanese or Asian decoration / gift.

This heavily inspired work of art-deco features two elegant and graceful cranes flying together. As the Japanese tradition suggests, it shows a married couple who will stay together for the rest of their lives.

The Crane symbolizes beauty, harmony, and grace. It represents positive change as it has been associated with the New Year in various cultures. Crane symbolism focuses on the need for balance and living in harmony with others. Cranes teach us that if we want respect, we must learn to give it first.

In Japan, these red-crowned cranes are called “Tanchozuru” and are believed to be symbolic of loyalty and strength. They’re also used in the international logo of Japan Airlines. There is a popular myth in the country which says that these birds live for over a thousand years.

Wajima lacquerware decorated with chinkin (gold inlay) and maki-e (gold-powder decoration) is one of Japan’s renowned lacquerware styles. Its distinguishing feature is its carefully applied undercoating. The wood used is from the Japanese zelkova and Noto hiba trees.

The edges of vessels, which can be easily damaged, are covered with hemp cloth and strengthened with lacquer. After that, undercoating processes are repeated several times, using a mixture of locally produced diatomaceous earth powder and lacquer. This undercoating technique strengthens the products, and has made Wajima lacquerware world-famous, along with its delicate, elegant decoration.

The “Association for the Preservation of Wajima Lacquerware Techniques” has been designated as a National Important Intangible Cultural Asset. Wajima lacquerware has a long history; in the Muromachi period (1336~1573), a monk from Negoro Temple in Kishu (present-day Wakayama Prefecture) introduced the lacquering technique to this area.

The chinkin technique originated in the Kyoho period (1716~1736), and the maki-e technique was brought from Kanazawa and Kyoto during the late Edo period and early Meiji period. These and other traditional techniques have been handed down in Wajima.
