Japanese Matsushiro pottery chawan, tea bowl, soup, rice bowl. Stunning piece of Japanese ceramic craft. Beautifully crafted with eye catching blue green glaze.

A perfect gift for Japanese tea ceremony lovers, for studio pottery collectors or beautiful vessel fans.

This exquisite piece has a shape and finish ideal for the Japanese tea matcha ceremony where the tea is not brewed but whipped in individual bowls. This classic shape features a prominent foot left bare of the glaze, a delicate edge enhanced by a brown hue contrasting with this beautiful glaze.

One detail makes it an exceptional piece is the drop controlled along the lower edge of the glaze as if it were melting. This latter feature is very difficult to perform successfully.

The gorgeous frosting with vibrant cobalt blue accents is simply mesmerizing to look at and is sure to contrast with the vibrant green of your matcha creations or any of your infused teas.

This item is handcrafted one by one and undergoes an intricate and precise glazing technique that requires multiple fires that exemplify the skill art of Japanese potters, This bowl is signed by the artist.

The bluish tint is due to the iron content of the clay, and the green glaze is unique to Matsushiro ware, it is said that by mixing copper, it reacts with the clay to create a unique luster.

Matsushiro pottery:

Matsushiro ware is pottery and porcelain made in Matsushiro District, Nagano City, Nagano Prefecture. However, Matsushiro got famous in the castle town of the Sanada Clan, and flourished as the clan’s official kiln. In the beginning of the Kansei era, Kaheiji, a potter who trained in Karatsu, established a kiln, and made indigo earthenware pots. After that, in 1816, the kiln was promoted as Matsushiro ware by the Matsushiro Domain’s kiln. At that time, Kaheiji’s kiln was acquired, and many potteries were established. Potters invited from Kyoto made Terao ware, potters invited from Shigaraki made Tennozan ware, and potters invited from Tokoname made Kojincho ware and Daikancho ware. They mainly made everyday pottery, but they were overwhelmed by Arita ware and Seto ware, who were mass-producing low-price products, causing all those kilns to close between the end of the Taisho era and the beginning of the Showa era.

The current Matsushiro ware was restored in 1972 by Karakida Matazo from Shinonoi, and the Isao family. The pottery that they established became Matsui pottery (Matsushiro Toen).
