Biography of Yumeji Takehisa:
Takeheisa Yumeji (1884-1934) was a Japanese poet, painter and designer. Artist of the Taisho era, his works reflect all the unique characteristics, beauty and charm of this era, in which he interprets both Japanese and Western cultures.
Takeshi Yumeji is called the romantic of the Taisho era, an era of dynamic development of society and active perception of the entire Western world by the Japanese. The main genres in which Takeshi Yumeji worked were the portrait of women and children, everyday scenes, landscapes, floral and geometric motifs. Yumeji was self-taught, he never studied drawing in any art school. At first, his landscapes were executed in a manner close to European Impressionism. But then the master found his own theme and developed his own unique style, depicting girls in kimonos, their faces, postures, gestures and inner peace, leaving a luminous trace in the artistic world of Japan.
At present, several museums in Japan are dedicated to Yumeji's work: the house-museum of the artist's native country in Okayama, the Ikaho Museum in Ikaho (Gifu Prefecture), the Takeshi Yumeji Art Museum in the Bunkyo-ku district of Tokyo, and the Kanazawa Yuvaku Yumeji-kan' Museum in Kanazawa City. They organize exhibitions, thematic conferences, kimono and yukata exhibitions from the Taisho era with models dressed in the style of the beautiful Yumeji. People continue to admire his work and modern-day artists are inspired by his works for their works.
