A Collectible Japanese Fine Art, a Kyoyaki Celadon Chawan late Meiji/early Taisho (early 20th) by Suwa Sozan decorated with a calligraphed poem by the Zen Monk Seki Rozan. In its original wooden box (tomobako) signed by the two artists.

A treasure for Japanese ceramic connoisseur or collector, celadon lovers.

This conic Seiji tea bowl, celadon chawan has a stunning shape which perfectly represents the delicacy that Suwa Sozan used to give to his works.

The opacity of the glaze as well as this jade color make it an exceptional ceramic artwork, magnified by the calligraphy in blue whose inscription means : White Clouds Enfold Dark Rocks (Hakuun yūseki wo idaku 白雲抱幽石).

The potter: Suwa Sozan I 蘇山 (1852-1922) was born in Kutani country, what is known today as Ishikawa prefecture.

Here he initially studied ceramics design and painting before moving to Tokyo in 1875. During his years in Tokyo he became friends with Ernest Francisco Fenollos, an american philosopher and scholar of Japanese arts who helped found the Tokyo School of Fine Arts and the Tokyo Imperial Museum.

In 1907 he started his own porcelain factory in Gojozaka in Kyoto, producing sophisticated items, modelled on traditional Chinese and Korean ware with overglazed decoration. He became famous for his celadon ware and was appointed Teishitsu Gigeiin n 1917. The Teishitsu Gigei-in (imperial Court Artist) were members of the Imperial Art Academy and there were only five Pottery artists. Perhaps in modern terms one might call them the predecessors to the Living National Treasures.

Suwa Sozan I died in 1922 in Kyoto and was succeeded by his adopted daughter Suwa Sozan II. Suwa Sozan's works are often exhibited in museums all around the world and for auction in the most prestigious houses as Bonham's.

The Calligrapher: Seki Hiroyama Seki-Rozan (1865-1944). He was born in Nagoya Former President of the Myoshinji School. Nagoya Tokugenji Temple.

In 1897, he was appointed as the head of the Myoshinji sect of Roshi, and became a teacher of the Tokugen monastery. In 1918, he became the president of the Myoshinji Temple. In the same year, he retired from the post of president and returned to Tokugenji Temple.
