Set of 6 traditional Japanese Kokeshi dolls made in Japan.

Highly decorative and charming. The Kokeshi are wooden dolls, real works of art entirely made and decorated by hand. They are considered a good omen against bad luck and considered a fine collector's item. "Traditional" kokeshi (dentō-kokeshi) dolls' shapes and patterns are particular to a certain area and are classified under eleven types.

This set is a perfect example of different traditional kokeshi systems with prime examples: 2 Hijori, 1 Tsuchiyu, 1 Naruko, 1 Nakanosawa, 1 Yajiro.

Hijori Kokeshi are quite rare as only a handful of people are still producing them. This is a nice opportunity to add fabulous dolls to your collection.

The tallest kokeshi is a Hijori Kokeshi doll by Sato Eihiro (sometimes Sato Hidehiro) (1951 ~). Born in Togatta Shinchi as the eldest son of Fumio Sato, the woodworker of Togatta Shinchi. After graduating from Tokarita Junior High School in 1966, he trained in Kiji with his grandfather Yuzo and his father Fumio. His wife, Kimiko, also started making kokeshi dolls around 1980. ❥ Very good vintage condition with few little flaws and color faded. It stands 36.5 cm.

The 2nd kokeshi is also a Hijiori kokeshi. A rare kokeshi rattle by Okuyama Kuraji (1934-2008). Born in Hijiori Onsen, Mogami District, Yamagata Prefecture as the eldest son of Hatsue. Around 1945, he learned wood from his father Kiyoji. From around 1964, he began to grind kokeshi dolls as a side business, and from around 1970, he became a full-time kokeshi doll. These rattle Kokeshi dolls have heads filled with adzuki beans that create a rattling sound. ❥ Good condition with little stains from water. It stands 25.5 cm.

The 3rd doll is a Tsuchiyu kokeshi by Sakuma Yoshimitsu (1945-). Kakou learned wood from his father Ya and his uncle Sashima from around 1958, but it was after 1975 that he mainly made kokeshi dolls. The doll in the set is dated 1979 from other sources. ❥ Vintage condition with stains from water. It stands 24.5 cm.

The 4th doll is a Nakanosawa Kokeshi by Honda Nobuo (1918-1995). ❥ Vintage condition with water stains and wood crack at the back. It stands 18 cm.

The 5th kokeshi is a Naruko Kokeshi made by a female artist Sugawara Kunimi (1948-2003).  ❥ Very good vintage condition with little sign of wears. It stands 18 cm.

The last but not least is a Yajiro Kokeshi made by Ishikawa Tokujiro (1915-2005). ❥ Good vintage good condition with faded colors. It stands 12.5 cm.
